What to Expect at Your First Dermatology Visit

Visiting a dermatologist for the first time can feel unfamiliar, so this page explains exactly how your appointment works. Whether you are attending for acne, eczema, rashes, mole checks, or any other skin concern, my goal is to provide a calm, clear, consultant-led experience from start to finish.

Arrival

Please arrive 5–10 minutes early to allow time for parking and check-in.
All three clinic sites have on-site parking.
At reception, the team will guide you directly to the dermatology waiting area.

Registration

On arrival, all patients will be asked to complete a short hospital background and medical information form.

  • All consultations and procedures are self-funded.
  • If you wish to claim through your insurer, you may use your receipt; however, any reimbursement is strictly between you and your insurer.
  • The clinic does not bill insurers or correspond with them on your behalf.

Before Your Consultation

Bringing the following can make your appointment smoother and more productive:

  • A list of your medications and allergies
  • Photos of recent flare-ups (very helpful for eczema, acne, urticaria, and intermittent rashes)
  • Previous dermatology letters, biopsy results, or test reports
  • A short list of the concerns or questions you would like to discuss

During Your Consultation

Your appointment is consultant-led and unhurried.
It typically includes:

  • A detailed discussion about your symptoms
  • Review of your medical history and previous treatments
  • A targeted skin examination (only the relevant areas are examined)
  • A clear explanation of the likely diagnosis
  • An opportunity to ask questions
  • A personalised, evidence-based treatment plan

This structured approach ensures clarity and allows us to explore both medical and practical aspects of your skin condition.

If Tests or Procedures Are Needed

If further investigation is appropriate, this will be explained clearly. Tests may include:

  • Skin biopsy under local anaesthetic
  • Blood tests (when relevant)
  • Clinical photographs for monitoring (with your consent)
  • Minor procedures such as lesion removal, cryotherapy, or injections

Biopsy results typically return in around 14 days.

After the Appointment

Before you leave, you will receive a clear summary of:

  • Your diagnosis or working diagnosis
  • Treatment recommendations and how to use them
  • Expected timelines for improvement
  • Whether follow-up is recommended
  • What to do if symptoms change or worsen

Your formal clinic letter is usually sent within 2–3 working days.

Our Commitment

My aim is to ensure your visit is:

  • Calm
  • Clear
  • Thorough
  • Easy to understand
  • Focused entirely on your skin health

Every element of the consultation is designed to give you confidence, clarity, and a personalised plan tailored to your needs.
