Acne Treatment

Before and after images showing significant improvement in forehead acne.

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions and can affect both teenagers and adults. It may present as blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots, cysts or nodules. Acne can sometimes result in permanent scarring if left untreated. Early assessment and treatment may reduce the risk of long-term scarring. Acne can also have a significant impact on confidence and quality of life.

At The General Dermatology®, acne is assessed and treated by Consultant Dermatologist Dr Alvin Lee. Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual and based on the severity of acne, previous treatments, skin type, lifestyle factors, and treatment goals.

Common types of acne we manage include:

• Teenage acne

• Adult acne

• Hormonal acne

• Cystic acne

• Acne affecting the face, chest and back

• Acne scarring

• Persistent or recurrent acne

• Acne that has failed to respond to previous treatments

Treatment options may include:

• Prescription topical treatments

• Oral antibiotics

• Hormonal treatments, including spironolactone or Dianette where appropriate

• Isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Accutane)

• Advice regarding skincare, triggers and long-term maintenance

We regularly assess and treat adult female hormonal acne, persistent acne, and treatment-resistant acne. Where appropriate, blood tests and monitoring can be arranged as part of treatment.

Considering Isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Accutane)?

For patients with moderate to severe acne, acne scarring, or acne that has failed to respond to conventional treatments, isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Accutane) may be considered. This treatment requires careful assessment, monitoring and follow-up throughout the course of treatment.

Online acne consultations are available throughout the UK. Patients can submit photographs before their consultation, allowing treatment to begin promptly where appropriate. Face-to-face appointments are available if examination, procedures or further investigations are required.

For suitable patients, isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Accutane) treatment can be arranged with appropriate counselling, monitoring and follow-up.
