Isotretinoin (commonly known by the brand name Roaccutane/Accutane) is one of the most effective treatments available for moderate to severe acne, particularly when other treatments have failed to provide satisfactory control.
At The General Dermatology®, isotretinoin treatment is provided by Consultant Dermatologist Dr Alvin Lee. Initial consultations and many follow-up appointments can be conducted online for patients throughout the UK, where clinically appropriate. Treatment is carefully monitored throughout the course to maximise effectiveness whilst maintaining safety.
Who may benefit from isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Accutane)?
• Moderate to severe acne
• Persistent adult acne
• Hormonal acne that has not responded to treatment
• Cystic or nodular acne
• Acne affecting the face, chest or back
• Acne causing scarring (Early treatment may help reduce the risk of permanent acne scarring.)
• Acne that has failed to respond to topical treatments or antibiotics
How does treatment work?
Isotretinoin is prescribed as a monitored treatment course, typically lasting 6–9 months, depending on individual response and tolerability.
Treatment may involve:
• Initial assessment and treatment planning
• Follow-up appointments
• Blood tests where appropriate
• Dose adjustment during treatment
• Ongoing monitoring and support
Online isotretinoin follow-up:
Many follow-up appointments can be conducted virtually where clinically appropriate.
Patients may be asked to provide:
• Clinical photographs
• Blood test results
• Pregnancy testing information where required
This allows treatment to continue safely without unnecessary travel.
Why choose The General Dermatology®?
• Consultant Dermatologist (UK CCT Accredited)
• Structured isotretinoin monitoring pathway

• Face-to-face appointments available if required

Important information:
Isotretinoin is a prescription-only medication and is not suitable for everyone. A full consultation is required before treatment can be started. Female patients of childbearing potential are subject to additional pregnancy prevention requirements.
Considering Other Acne Treatments?
Not all patients require isotretinoin. Depending on the type and severity of acne, treatment options may include prescription topical treatments, oral antibiotics, hormonal treatments such as spironolactone or Dianette, and skincare advice.
